- Description:
- The Spatial Crime Research Working Group seeks to integrate thinking in three different fields (Geography, Sociology, and Statistics) about the sources of neighborhood crime and the role of neighborhood context in crime and other problematic behaviors (e.g., drug use) of individuals. Drawing on work in these various fields, the group conducts research and engages in associated activities to lay a foundation for future advances in interdisciplinary work on this important policy topic. The spatial crime group has been active since Spring 2005 and to date have developed three projects: "Segregation and Local Crime: An Integrated Spatial Analysis" (funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation's Sociology and Law and Social Sciences programs); (2) "Dynamics of Space and Time Use: Patterns, Causes, and Consequences for Crime and Problem Behaviors" (funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation's Human and Social Dynamics program); and, (3) "Spatial Patterns of Social Isolation, Youthful Marijuana Use, and Sexual/HIV Risk" (funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health ). Through working on these projects, the group has or plans to: (1) develop theoretical models to explain crime and other social problems at the neighborhood and individual levels; (2) develop measures (e.g., local segregation, social isolation) and methodological strategies that will serve as models for research in a variety of fields seeking to integrate multiple types of spatial data and concepts; (3) make available to the scientific community newly refined GIS-based measures of local segregation and neighborhood physical and ecological characteristics as supplements to the "National Neighborhood Crime Study;" and, (4) provide an attractive topic and diverse mentors for undergraduate and graduate students of color and from economically disadvantaged backgrounds seeking to enhance their ability to conduct research.
