Community Police Academy

Community Police Academy is a free four-week program designed to give eligible community members an idea of what it’s like to protect and serve on campus. The Ohio State University Police Division (OSUPD) is committed to serving a diverse population of students, faculty staff and visitors. Its Community Police Academy is a free four-week program designed to give eligible community members an idea of what it’s like to protect and serve on campus, whlie affording OSUPD yet another opportunity to learn first-hand about subjects and issues that matter to the university community.  Each session consists of weekly classes at Blankenship Hall where participants will discuss OSUPD programs, policies and procedures. The comprehensive instruction includes open discussion and scenario-based role playing, concluding with a ride-along.  It is hoped that Community Police Academy graduates both learn more about how OSUPD operates and share insights with their friends and colleagues.

Who May Attend

The Community Police Academy is open to current students, faculty and staff members interested in learning about university policing. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, a member of The Ohio State University community and pass a background check. Please do not apply if you have been charged with or convicted of a felony.

Program Objectives

OSUPD’s unique approach to law enforcement includes education and community interaction. The Community Police Academy is an open forum for officers and community members to interact and engage in an educational environment promoting positive communication and cultivating new ideas and methods in working together. The course will provide a unique perspective into the daily activities and the decision-making process of OSUPD officers.

Responsibilities of Participants

  1. Participants are expected to comply with Ohio laws, all pertinent university rules and regulations and all policies, rules and regulations of The Ohio State University Police Division. It is the responsibility of the participant to ascertain and comply with these requirements.
  2. Participants are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that will reflect credit to themselves, the university and the agent/organization. This includes personal appearance.
  3. Materials will be provided by The Ohio State University Police Division.
  4. Participants must be 18 years of age and consent to a background check.

Class Dates and Times

October 18, 25, and November 1 and 8  from 6:00 to 9:00 pm at Blankenship Hall, 901 Woody Hayes Drive, Columbus Ohio  43210

Participants must complete a 2-hour ride-along as part of the class.

Classroom space is very limited. There are no fees associated to attend this program.

The program will be two parts: classroom lecture and practical application.

Classroom Lecture
Classroom lecture will include presentations, case studies and discussions about police procedures by members of the University Police who specialize in the topic of discussion.

Practical Application
Participants will engage in scenarios where they will simulate a response to a given situation. An after-action review will be conducted with the participants after completion of each practical scenario.
