Mass incarceration is at an epidemic level in our country. More than 2.3 million people are in prison in the United States. Even though our crime rates mirror many industrial nations, America incarcerates more people than any other nation. The incarceration rate of many countries is less than twenty percent of the U.S. incarceration rate. What ethical, moral and political questions should our country’s incarceration rate—and the human toll it represents—raise for us?  "Rikers: An American Jail", a riveting new award wining documentary  brings you face to face with men and women who have endured incarceration at Rikers Island. Their stories, told direct to camera, vividly describe the cruel arc of the Rikers experience—from the shock of entry, to the extortion and control exercised by other inmates, the oppressive interaction with corrections officers, the beatings and stabbings, and the many challenges of returning to the outside world. Following the screening, a panel of criminal justice experts, community professinals and formerly incarcerated individuals will discuss the documentary. This screening, in Columbus, will be the first City outside of east coast to present this film.  This event is sponsored by the Criminal Justice Research Center, Franklin County Office of Justice Policy and Programs, and two Ohio State University student organizations PassGo and the Sociology/Criminology Club.  Gateway Film Center, 1550 North High Street, Columbus, Ohio 43201 Criminal Justice Research Center cjrc@osu.edu America/New_York public
