The State of Mercy in Ohio and at Ohio State

Buckeye Book Community First Year Success Series presents Bryan Stevenson’s book "Just Mercy" which has raised a variety of questions about life in prison, capital punishment and life after prison. What do these issues look like in Ohio? What opportunities do students have to deepen their understanding of the criminal justice system while at Ohio State? Explore these questions with professors teaching courses in local prisons that are open to Ohio State students and graduates of those courses, including restored citizens. Speakers: Dr. Angela Bryant, Associate Professor, Department of Sociology Dr. Brenda Chaney, Senior Lecturer, Department of Sociology.  Both have taught college courses for Ohio State students in local prisons for many years. Dr. Amy Shuster, Visiting Assistant Professor, Department of Philosophy will speak to the possibility of adding more of these class options for Ohio State students. Marshall Troxell and Brittany Lewis, current Ohio State students will share their experiences of completing these courses offered in local prisons. Terry Green, Ohio State alumnus, CEO and Founder of Think Make Live This social enterprise initiative seeks to disrupt barriers for underserved populations by empowering communities through leadership training, programs and seminars.
