Text Files of Original Documents
Printed original documents on the history of violence will be maintained in Microsoft Word if they are in the public domain and optical character recognition (OCR) is possible. The goal is to provide searchable texts that can be integrated into worksheets on particular kinds of violence.
We have begun the process with two local histories:
- W. H. Tippetts (1885) Herkimer County [New York] Murders (October 2003 version) in .pdf (PDF) format
- Milo Erwin (1876) History of Williamson County, Illinois (December 2007 version) in .pdf (PDF) format
These two histories, written by local attorneys, contain detailed accounts of homicides that occurred in each county. Many town and county histories published in the nineteenth and early twentieth century contain detailed accounts of violent crimes and violent deaths. A number include lists of homicides, suicides, accidents, executions, and other sensational events. Such histories often contain evidence from eyewitnesses or from oral tradition that is not available in other sources.
