Homicide among Adults in Maryland, 1635-1762, and Virginia, 1607-1900

Compiled by Randolph Roth

October 2009 version

The data on homicide among adults in Maryland and Virginia were compiled by Randolph Roth for his study of American Homicide (Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 2009). The sources are described in that study. The data on murders of children under the age of 16 will be posted when Roth completes his study of Child Murder in America.

The spreadsheet contains homicide data from both states from the entire period. The worksheets for four counties in Virginia—Amelia, Lancaster, Rockbridge, and Surry—span the years from the colonial period to 1900. The other worksheets for the other counties cover the colonial period or the colonial and revolutionary periods. The “Virginia homicide” files are from various sources.
